OPEN POSITIONS

POTTERY STUDIO TECH, Part-time

TYPE: Part-time, entry level position. With full-time opportunities ~  2-4 months
AWARD: ‘Amusement, Events & Recreation Award’ General Exhibition Hand, grade 2-4
EST. HOURLY RATE: $26/hr – $28/hr, based on experience. Plus super & leave entitlements. 3 mo. probationary period. Also see section ‘Job Perks’.

EXPERIENCE: This position requires prior pottery experience. Prior working knowledge of the entire process – creation to glazing – is essential, however we are willing to train the right person. Ideal candidates would have some experience in glaze dipping and/or kiln loading or be confident in learning/championing these responsibilities.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is a studio all-rounder, covering 3 main areas of responsibility each week. This role does require some lifting (ex. bags of clay & buckets of glaze & kiln shelves). 

1. Studio Technician (hands on) Responsibilities – Glaze & Kiln Tech – finishing workshop artworks, mixing glazes, dipping artworks in glaze, loading kilns, grinding kiln shelves, etc. Inventory & Fulfillment – the ordering of glaze ingredients, clay/tools stock levels, online order packing. Studio Upkeep – cleaning/mopping/clay recycling/clay trap cleaning. 

2. Teaching/Assisting Responsibilities- Prepping for workshops. Assisting during lessons/workshops/private events. Ability (or willingness to train) to instruct small classes of 1 – 5 people of beginner-level students in a workshop/private lesson (hourly rate jumps to $35/hr for the duration of the lesson). 

3. Customer Service Responsibilities- There will be some admin support on shift. Supporting the admin role by replying to customer inquiries, answering the studio phone, customer service, welcoming workshop students and capturing social media content of the process. Taking payment via our POS for retail purchases.

 

PROPOSED WORKING HOURS: 19.5 hours a week

Wed (7 hrs): 12 noon – 7:30pm (½ hr unpaid meal break)
Thurs (7 hrs): 12 noon – 7:30pm (½ hr unpaid meal break)
Fri (7 hrs): 12 noon – 7:30pm (½ hr unpaid meal  break)

STUDIO INSTRUCTORS, Casual

 TYPE: Casual mid-level position.
AWARD: ‘Amusement, Events & Recreation Award’ Grade 4 (Exhibition Technician) min. award $32.73 hourly
EST. HOURLY RATE: $35/hr (plus super) ordinary & $53/hr public holidays. Also see section ‘Job Perks’.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is for passionate potters (hand builders and/or wheel throwing) interested in teaching one of our Pottery Workshops! Workshops are 1 part entertainment (must have the ability to be a good host) and 1 part pottery (must be a a hobby level or higher). Shifts are requested 1-2 weeks in advance.

  • Prepping of the workshop area prior to the start of the workshop
  • Leading the workshop participants through a demo
  • Encouraging & supporting workshop students to be creative. Help people take home something special.
  • Responsible for the end artwork applied techniques (bases not to thick, items properly slipped & scored, artworks must have tags, colours/tags recorded properly)
  • Using Square POS to charge for additional items fired. Upselling additional artworks and talking about courses.
  • Ensuring workshop runs timely
  • Packing down of the workshop area
  • Attaching handles or mending any pieces 
  • Organising artworks on racks & covering them with plastic to slow their drying
  • Reports or notes for owners following workshop

STUDIO ASSISTANT, Casual

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is 2 parts – 1 part muddy pottery duties & 1 part customer service.

Pottery (hands on) Responsibilities –  Prepping of artworks for the kiln, recycling clay, finishing workshop artworks, glazing. 

Customer Service Responsibilities- Assisting during pottery workshops, capturing images for socials, helping customers find their orders, answering phone calls, taking payments via POS, answering questions about workshops, and communicating with team members/owners with requests from customers.

ART STUDIO ASSISTANT, 3 Mo Internship

TYPE: 3 Month Art Studio Internship

PAY: While unpaid, there are job placement opportunities following the completion of the intern program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Designed to provide work experience in a large, self-funded Art Studio. This position is ideal for current students to compliment their higher education studies. It is a weekly 

  • Admin & Fulfillment – replying to customer emails, picking & packing orders, prepping for workshops, artwork handling & custom commission work.
  • Marketing Experience – email campaigns, social media & promotions planning, content capturing.
  • Business Planning – understanding margins & markets & basic bookkeeping tools.
  • Studio Maintenance – Cleaning, organising, operational efficiency for routine/mundane tasks.
  • Technical Operations – prepping of artworks for the kiln, assisting in glaze dipping/kiln loading/glaze mixing.
  • Teaching Assisting – participating in a workshop/lesson atmosphere as an assistant.

JR STUDIO ASSISTANT, Casual

TYPE: Casual, junior, entry-level position
AWARD: ‘Amusement, Events & Recreation Award’
Junior Non-Exhibition introductory level employee
EST. HOURLY RATE: $15.55/hr to $21.20/hr (depending on age)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Key Responsibilities – 

  • Greeting customers who visit studio
  • Assembling & packing Online Orders
  • Assisting Studio Tech with Inventory Counting, Management & Reordering
  • Prepping workshop area, prior to workshops/classes/courses
  • Preportioning & wedging clay for workshops
  • Pre-washing, washing & hanging aprons for drying
  • Refilling underglazing pots & washing pottery tools
  • Keep studio clean & orderly (dust gallery shelves, clean windows, keep wheel table and hand building tables clean & tidy, mopping floors, keeping lavatories clean & fresh)

 

Learning Opportunities – 

  • Learn to assist customers with picking up artworks at the studio
  • Learn to assist workshops, classes & courses
  • Learn to speak to customers about the different options available to begin to learn pottery – workshops, classes, courses, etc.
  • Learn to finish pottery pieces & assist staging kilns

 

POTENTIAL SHIFTS (rostered weekly):
Wednesday (3.5 hrs): 4pm – 7:30pm
Thursday (3.5 hrs): 4pm – 7:30pm
Friday (3.5 hrs): 4pm – 7:30pm
