Terraform Studio presents The Figure in Clay – a three-Friday Sculpting Masterseries with international artist Will Huntley. Working directly from a professional life model, you’ll develop your understanding of structure, proportion, shadow and movement in the human form, along with the techniques needed to bring this knowledge to life in clay. Over the course of the Masterseries, each participant will create their own figurative sculpture. Suitable for beginners committed to learning as well as practicing artists seeking to strengthen their understanding of the figure.

MASTERSERIES CLASS OUTLINE


Class 1 – Friday 12 June @ 5pm
Blocking the Figure from Life (3-hours)

We are joined by our professional life model for the first session. As they settle into a comfortable pose, you will learn how to see bones, shadows, muscles, and variations in the human form. With Will’s instruction, you will begin to block out the figure in clay, focusing on shapes & form, creating the foundation of your sculpture. 


Class 2 – Friday 19 June @ 5pm
Defining the Form (3-hours)

As you progress from the blocking stage to cutting away negative space, you will be told and shown how to find reference points and how to “measure” them. You will also learn how the skeleton aligns itself to attain balance. You will begin to see the angles of each extremity and how, from basic blocks, we can carve them into rounded, lithe muscle and bone to balance the form into a continuous, flowing and strong human form. 


Class 3 – Friday 26 June @ 5pm
Refining and Detailing (3-hours)

You will learn how to bring your sculpture to life as you refine the shape and carve out the finer details; facial features, finger nails, ears, and hair etc. Upon completion of this lesson, you will have a three-dimensional sculpture, created with your own hand, The Figure in Clay.


2 x Self-guided Studio Sessions (2-hours each)
This session allows you to continue to work on your sculpture outside of the class. Participants are invited to send progress photos of their sculpture to Will during these self-guided studio sessions and receive additional guidance and feedback as you continue to develop your work. Flexible availability within Terraform Studio’s opening hours.

Meet Will Huntley

Will Huntley is an American Sculpture Artist with over 35 years of experience in multiple Art disciplines namely Sculpture, Film & Theatre, Mould Making, and 3D Design/Printing. As a lifelong artist, Will is passionate about breathing life into sculpture from the initial blocking, down to the finest of details.
